After talking with a D1 College Football player about how they trained this past season he told me that their teams in season strength training program was all about “maintenance”. Every time I here this I cringe. You kill yourself from January to Aug and then hope that this will care you the next four and half months. What happens is the team slowly loses their performance edge usually right around mid October. Look up the past results from teams that started hot and then faded around this time period. It shows the sign of a program that doesn’t fully understand how sports performance works. This athletes team went on a four game losing streak around this time period and cost themselves a bowl game and their Head Coach his job. You want to be at your physical best at the most important time of the year November & December. It is possible to make performance gains in season. Maintaining is detraining. Football is about Power, Strength, and Speed. All three must be stimulated often to condition the body. If not you will lose your edge. We train for Power, Strength, and Speed all year round.
